Sustainability - Food Waste Audit
The LWHS PTSA is pleased to continue supporting our students in their vision for creating a comprehensive sustainability culture at LWHS. Recent opportunities have allowed both students and the community to participate in an all-school transformation in time for Earth Week (week of April 17-21).  The most recent activity was a food waste audit conducted on March 16 in the LWHS Commons. Principal Bell kicked off the audit with 17 students, most from the Green Team and Honor Society, along with PTSA Sustainability Chair Stephanie Lecovin, PTSA President Tanya Knudsen, and Green Team Advisor Andrea Thody. The PTSA funds student programs, events, and grants to teachers for professional training and classroom supplies–all to benefit the educational experience. To our sustainability-minded students and families interested in advocacy:    LWHS began to participate in King County Green Schools Program in September of 2017. We were recognized as a  Level One Green School  in 2018 for our efforts in waste reduction and recycling practices, and as a  Level Two Green School  in 2019 for maintaining waste reduction and recycling practices while also engaging in energy conservation education and practices. Washington State PTA offers four $2,500 scholarships to graduating seniors from Washington public high schools with an active PTA/PTSA (lucky for LWHS Parents, we have an active PTSA!), who will be starting either a two-year or four-year college the following fall.
