The LWHS PTSA is pleased to continue supporting our students in their vision for creating a comprehensive sustainability culture at LWHS. Recent opportunities have allowed both students and the community to participate in an all-school transformation in time for Earth Week (week of April 17-21).

The most recent activity was a food waste audit conducted on March 16 in the LWHS Commons. Principal Bell kicked off the audit with 17 students, most from the Green Team and Honor Society, along with PTSA Sustainability Chair Stephanie Lecovin, PTSA President Tanya Knudsen, and Green Team Advisor Andrea Thody. The group weighed and measured the waste from lunch that day, sorting it into four different categories: items that could be donated/shared, items that could be composted, items that could be recycled, and finally those items to be trashed. They weighed and measured the sorted piles, which will determine how much waste from lunch could potentially be kept out of the landfill and feed people who are hungry.

The waste audit was critical to establish a baseline and determine next steps to create a new waste sorting/composting system that will include food donation, composting, and recycling. The group plans to have the new system up and running at LWHS by Earth Week in April.
