Shelley Scholarships Awarded to Four Outstanding Seniors
Our eastside community is overflowing with innovative businesses and extraordinary individuals. And make no mistake, young adults in Kirkland and Redmond are no exception. LWHS PTSA recently recognized Lauren Peterson, Aubri Baskin, Conor Knox, and Dylan Sabine for their outstanding scholarship, school involvement, leadership activities, vocational pursuits, fine arts, athletics and community service.
These four seniors are this year's recipients of the Lake Washington High School PTSA's Louise Sheeley Scholarships. The scholarships are named after a beloved, former counselor at the high school.
Each applicant possessed unique qualifications rising to the top of a strong applicant field. Post-high school plans for the seniors include attending college and pursuing careers in global health, food sciences and marine biology.

We don't want you to leave, but ...
This is the final issue of Kang Crier for this school year. We know many of you have seniors that you are about to kick out of the house. Unfortunately, you can easily unsubscribe from this newsletter. Just scroll down to the very bottom and click the "SafeUnsubscribe" link. However, please remember that with every unsubscribe a kangaroo sheds a tear.
Students will pick up their schedules the first day of school either outside the main entry or in the commons (depending on the weather).
Farewell Seniors
Our seniors leave behind four years of academics, involvement in extra-curricular activities and athletics, and special friendships. This is a lot to leave behind! Most seniors feel this "loss" at the moving up assembly or at graduation. The up side of this, though, is that most of our seniors have plans for the fall. They are continuing their academic and social growth.
You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself
Any direction you choose.
You're on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go.
From Oh, The Places You'll Go! by Dr. Seuss
It's been a pleasure working with the seniors this year. We're happy for their successes at Lake Washington High School, and we look forward to hearing about their continued successes in the years to come. Parents should feel equally proud for all their efforts of encouragement and support. I know we could not have been as effective without help from parents. Congratulations to all!
If your student is out 1-4 days for reasons other than being sick, they must fill out a pre-arranged absence form (page 1 only) at least a week in advance in order to ensure that the absences will be excused. If your student will be out 5 or more days for reasons other than being sick, they must fill out a pre-arranged absence form (pages 1 & 2) at least a week in advance, in order to ensure the absences will be excused.
When a student is out 5 or more days, the student needs to fill out also page 2 of the form, fill in the information as it pertains, list classes, parent needs to fill in how they plan to have their student stay on top of their studies while out, the student then will retrieve all the teacher's signatures and then retrieves the parent signature and then turns it into the attendance office for administrative approval. Page 2 also must need to be completed if the total number of days is 10 or more days. The process of filling out the pre-arranged absence form is also separate in that if your student had already informed teachers, they must also inform the attendance office. This line between Teachers and Attendance is 2 different areas.
Open to all LW students, Kangapalooza is NEXT Friday, June 15th from 6p-8p out on the football field. For those who don't know, Kangapalooza is an old tradition here where we celebrate the end of the year with food, games, and fun times for everyone. This year, we have some games and bouncy slides, food trucks, and musical performances. This event is FREE!!! Save for the food trucks - you do want to bring your dollars to buy some grub. Also, anyone wanting to participate in the bouncy games will have to turn in a permission slip. Slips are available from your HOMEROOM teacher, at the main office front desk, or right outside room 168. On Friday, June 15 during lunches, you'll be able to trade your permission slip in for a green bracelet that will allow you to go on the bouncy slides. No bracelet, no slides. We hope you'll come hang out, have some fun, and celebrate the end of the school year at KANGAPALOOZA 2018!!!

June 14 from 6:30 - 8:30pm is the Senior Salute, an inspirational and intimate celebration for graduating students and their families. There will be musical performances, poems, and student reflections - 6:30 - 7:30pm. 7:30 - 8:30pm will be the reception & refreshments will be served in the Commons. Many families appreciate this slower-paced, more personal opportunity to visit and photograph their cap-and-gowned graduates at the high school.
We 're looking forward to a fun and safe, all-night celebration June 18th after Graduation! It is imperative that both parents and graduates read and understand our guidelines and rules before the party. (Party-goers must have a previously purchased ticket.)
Senior Salute 2018: A Beautiful Evening is Planned
Don't forget the 2018 Senior Salute tomorrow evening! Seniors are called at 6pm in the Auxillary Gym, and doors open to guests in the main Gym also at 6pm. Parking can be difficult at Senior Salute, so allow extra time.
As we are fast approaching graduation, we are also planning for the many events to celebrate our seniors. One of the ways we like to celebrate our seniors is by starting Graduation day with a hearty breakfast. Seniors will be provided a delicious breakfast in the school commons at 8:00am on June 18th (Graduation Day) right before the graduation rehearsal held in the gym at 9:00am. The rehearsal is mandatory for seniors to participate in, in order to participate in the ceremony. This is a great opportunity for seniors to get some food, hang with friends, and relax before their big day gets busy. We are reaching out as we need volunteers to help set up, serve, and clean up the breakfast. The school is providing the supplies, but we need your helping hands.
Senior Salute will be on Thursday, June 14th from 6:30 to 8:30pm in the Gym, this event is optional but it is a great way to see your students and peers share their talents and passions in a more intimate setting then Graduation on June 18th (2pm at Key Arena).
We will also have our Senior Sunset on June 17th, Sunday, the night before Graduation to bring together the end of our Senior Year, this will be on the football or baseball field at Sunset (TBD).
Please share the dates with your family and remind your student(s). Email s-lapeterson@lwsd.org if you have any questions about Senior Events!
