LWHS PTSA Membership - Why Join?

Local, state, and the National PTA have worked for over 100 years toward bettering the lives of children in education, health and safety.

Today's PTA is a network of millions of families, students, teachers, administrators, and business and community leaders devoted to the educational success of children and the promotion of family engagement in schools.

Parents and staff, we hope that you'll continue our organization's strong membership. Our students benefit from a strong PTSA. When you join the LWHS PTSA, YOU:
  • Show commitment to our school community - a big motivator to staff, students and volunteers
  • Join the largest child advocacy organization in the state: The WA State PTA (and National PTA too)
  • Gain access to the online student directory and receive discounts to FedEx Office, Great Wolf Lodge and more
  • Get to vote on key decisions that affect the PTSA budget, programs, grants, scholarships etc.
You can join online and pay by credit card or pick up a membership form in the office and pay by check. Thank you for your support, we really appreciate it.

Curriculum Night September 13
Pre-session parent ed sessions are also offered.

All LWHS parents are invited and encouraged to attend LWHS's annual open house/curriculum night on Wednesday, September 13 (Please note this change of date, originally scheduled for September 20). Our Pre-sessions and 0-period will begin at 5:30pm. Schedules will be distributed from 6:00pm to 6:30 as attendees will be able to follow their students' schedule period by period that evening. The formal program will begin in the main gym at 6:30 with opening remarks from Christina Thomas, LWHS's principal. This evening is designed to ensure parents have an opportunity to hear what their students will be studying this year directly from their teachers and see their classrooms firsthand. It is also a good chance to connect with other parents and to tour the school. Visit the school website for more information about the schedule and descriptions of optional pre-session offerings, which will start at 5:30pm.
Join our team!

Come connect with our school community and other parents! Our PTSA is involved in building our Kang community in many ways, and we need parents like you to make it all happen. With efforts and programs that serve all parts of our community -- teachers, students, and parents -- there are volunteer opportunities of many shapes and sizes. We are looking for people interested in the following programs and positions:
  • Parent Education
  • Advocacy
  • Spring Awards
  • Senior Salute chair (there is an experienced committee!)
  • and co-chairs for Membership and Emergency Prep.

If you are interested in learning more, please contact Mindy Lincicome or Irene Neumann.

Seeking PTSA Membership Co-Chair

We're recruiting for a PTSA Membership co-chair or Membership-in-Training position. Our current longstanding Membership chair will be leaving after this year and it would be great to recruit someone to train to take over the position for next year. This volunteer job is fun and rewarding. It's a Board level position and combines marketing, sales, and computer skills. It's easy and fun once you've been trained. Why not learn more about it? For more information email lwhsptsamem@gmail.com.
Join LWHS Parents in Saying No to Alcohol and Drugs

In conjunction with The National PTA Alcohol and Drug Free Resolution and the Washington State PTA, the LWHS PTSA is again sponsoring the Parent Pledge program to achieve the following goals:
  • To build a communication network to reduce the use of alcohol and other drugs among teens in our school and community.
  • To host only Alcohol-Free, Tobacco-Free and Drug-Free parties for teens.
  • To not allow teens to possess or consume alcohol, tobacco or other drugs at their homes.
  • To discourage their teens from attending unsupervised parties.
By signing this Parent Pledge, you are letting other LWHS PTSA families know that you intend to supervise your child's social gatherings in your home and provide an alcohol, tobacco and drug free space. This pledge sends a clear message that as parents/guardians, and as a community, we believe underage drinking, tobacco, and drug use is unacceptable. Please note that if a family is not listed in the directory, it does not necessarily mean they do not support the pledge. Only PTSA Members can access the online parent directory.
You have the option to sign the pledge when you become a LWHS PTSA member or you can print out the pledge form and turn it in to the office. Questions? Email lwhsptsaVPProg@gmail.com.
College Application Workshop Resumes This Fall

The LWHS PTSA returns with its successful program, College Application Workshop for LWHS Seniors. Now in our third year, trained volunteers will assist our Seniors this Fall with college application essay and personal statement support. We also answer questions about the college process and steer students in the right direction for any additional support they may need. Seniors are invited to meet after school each Wednesday and on Thursday mornings (during ROO period), beginning in September through December. Please encourage your student to take advantage of our time and expertise! They are welcome to drop in as often as they'd like, there is no cost. (And we have lunch and snacks!)  Please note that starting in February, the workshops change focus to include Juniors as they begin the college application process.  These workshops are geared toward specific topics, such as how to conduct college visits, how to select a college, information on specific college majors, etc.  The college application submission season for high school seniors typically runs between August through January.

... interested in volunteering for College Application workshops?
Volunteer with College Application Workshop(s)!

Volunteers are needed for the 2017-18 school year as we continue this successful program and we would love to have you join us! Workshops meet Wednesdays after school at 12:40 pm and Thursdays (during ROO period) at 9:31 am. We ask for a once-a-week commitment from September through January. PTSA training is provided. View more details and/or contact Judy Shedd to volunteer.
High School and Beyond Day PSAT Registration is NOW OPEN

Wednesday, October 11th is Lake Washington High School's annual High School and Beyond Day.

During High School and Beyond Day, Freshmen and Seniors will participate in a series of graduation-required workshops, Sophomores will take the PSAT (free of charge), and Juniors will have the option to take the PSAT for a fee of $16 or participate in the ASVAB Career Exploration Program, which is free of charge.

Space for 11th and 12th graders is limited, and interested students are required to pay the registration fee by the District-Wide deadline of October 4th.

Payment can be made via credit card on Parent Access, or at the Cashiers office before school or during lunch.

If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Kristjanson.

Help Spread the Word

Parents, the "Kang Crier" is the primary communication mechanism through which the LWHS PTSA provides information to LWHS families. The next several issues will be sent to returning LWHS families and to those incoming families who have signed up to receive the Kang Crier. Once we receive all LWHS family email addresses in October, we will send the Kang Crier to all. In the meantime, please help us reach all incoming families by forwarding this to families who may not receive it. They can sign up to receive the Kang Crier on the PTSA website or forward them this email so they can click and subscribe.
