PTSA Positions Open for 2018-2019

While we have all of our Board positions filled for 2018-2019, we are still looking to fill some key chair positions. Take a look and if you are interested, please reach out to lwhsptsapres@gmail.com. Each position comes with ample training. We would love to have you!

Newsletter Editor will prepare the Kang Crier every other week to keep Lake Washington High School parents informed about news and activities of the PTSA, school and district. The Kang Crier Editor manages the process of communicating with submission sources, collecting articles, and creating the newsletter with provided web-based software.

Advocacy Chair will stay informed of PTA legislative priorities and relevant education legislation emerging during session. The chair will also stay informed about district policies and would support bond and levy measures. Other local advocacy opportunities might arise, such as with this year's walk out for gun safety, where LWHS PTSA provided a letter-writing opportunity for students.

Parent Education Chair will coordinate speakers on topics of interest for the LWHS community. Often speakers will be invited to speak at the PTSA General Membership meetings or as needed.

Free YES Mental Health Event

We are helping to pass on the word that Youth Eastside Services is holding an upcoming event "13 Reasons Why...To Have a Conversation with Your Child" that was developed in response to the release of the second season of 13 Reasons Why.

This is a free, educational event for parents that will facilitate a conversation around the second season of Netflix's 13 Reasons Why and offer parents resources to engage with their child on the topics of suicide, depression, and anxiety; and how our community and schools are responding to the increased risk.

There will be four panelists: YES counselor Michelle Brode, Megan Kennedy from the University of Washington who has been developing a comprehensive suicide prevention plan, Matt Gillingham Director of Student Services at Lake Washington School District, and Renee Jones and Cailyn Griffith from the Crisis Clinic.

The event is on Monday, June 4th, 6-7:3pm at the YES offices in Bellevue (right in Crossroads Park.) There is an RSVP (please see flyer for info).

Graduation Tickets

Each senior will receive 10 tickets during graduation rehearsal on June 18th. If you are expecting more than 10 guests, extra tickets can be picked up at that time from counselors.

Senior Final Transcript Request

At the senior class meeting on Thursday, May 3 all seniors were given information on how to complete the "Final Transcript Request" form available online. Regardless where the student is headed after graduation, each senior must notify us of his/her plans. Even if students are unclear regarding their fall commitment, they should have a final transcript sent to their home address. Please check with your senior to make sure that this form has been submitted to the Counseling Center. Final transcripts will be mailed by July 1st.

Moving Over the Summer?

If your student does not plan to return to LWHS in the fall, s/he must withdraw from LWHS before we break for summer. Please contact Sarah Mebust in the Counseling Center for more information.

Attendance Reminder

If your student is out 1-4 days for reasons other than being sick, they must fill out a pre-arranged absence form (page 1 only) at least a week in advance in order to ensure that the absences will be excused. If your student will be out 5 or more days for reasons other than being sick, they must fill out a pre-arranged absence form (pages 1 & 2) at least a week in advance, in order to ensure the absences will be excused.

When a student is out 5 or more days, the student needs to fill out also page 2 of the form, fill in the information as it pertains, list classes, parent needs to fill in how they plan to have their student stay on top of their studies while out, the student then will retrieve all the teacher's signatures and then retrieves the parent signature and then turns it into the attendance office for administrative approval. Page 2 also must need to be completed if the total number of days is 10 or more days. The process of filling out the pre-arranged absence form is also separate in that if your student had already informed teachers, they must also inform the attendance office. This line between Teachers and Attendance is 2 different areas.

Yearbook Props

Please take time to enjoy the 2017-2018 yearbook that will be distributed Wednesday, June 6th. The yearbook staff staff has taken time to create a photobook that has recorded the year for students, staff, and families to enjoy. As you look over the yearbook, please keep in mind that this is a student production and a labor of love. There will likely be mistakes, but please focus on the positive aspects of this 349-page creation and let your first comments be positive and appreciative. As with any sport, no one wants to be remembered for their errors, dropped passes, fumbled ball,or missed free throw.

Please congratulate our yearbook staff for achieving the following this year:

  • They completed all deadlines on time.
  • Ninety percent of our student bodyis in the book three or more times.
  • The photos, surveys, and designs have taken hours of labor and learning to produce.

Thank you for all you've done to help us give birth to this colossal project:

Thanks for a great year!

We've wrapped up our 3rd year! Thanks to the support of the PTSA, faculty, staff, and dedicated volunteers, we reached 460 students with college application essay support for seniors in the fall and Spring presentations focused on helping freshman, sophomores and juniors with their college exploration process.

Here's a shout out to the people who made it happen:

  • Parents, you were the number one reason students showed up! Thank you for encouraging them to attend essay workshops and presentations. It worked!
  • Melanie Kristjanson, Career Specialist, for her consistent support, knowledge, tech skills and sense of humor!
  • Many thanks to our Essay Support Volunteers, we couldn't do it without them: Kirsten Abboud, Kate Cole, Martha Craig, Laurel Hair, Liz Hedreen, Valerie Horvath, Shannon Jones, Sarah Leonard, Debbie Ohman and Alison Thomas.
  • Thanks to Karen Peters for her Spring presentations support and amazing creative and design skills.
  • Yearlong support of the administration, Liz Courage, Librarian and her staff as well as Mili Nelson whose announcements helped us stay organized and operate smoothly.

We enjoy our work with the students and look forward to continuing next year. Please be on the look out, we'll keep you posted!

Two Weeks Until Senior Salute
Seniors: Wear your cap and gown!

Join us Thursday, June 14 at 6:30 pm in the Gym for the 2018 Senior Salute! This traditional celebration of the graduating class includes a program from 6:30-7:30pm with musical performances, poems, student reflections and a brief speech by teacher Amy Sullivan. A reception and refreshments follow in the Commons from 7:30-8:30pm. Be sure to bring your camera as this is your best chance to take pictures of your graduate in cap and gown at LWHS. Seniors should check-in by 6:00pm in the auxiliary gym. They will stay there until it's time to proceed (or, for the processional) into the gym to music played by the LWHS Orchestra. Doors to guests open at 6:00pm. Parking can fill up, please allow adequate time.

RSVP: Please let us know how many people will be in your party: email the graduate's name, parent's name, accessibility needs, and number of guests -- not counting the graduate -- to LWHS.SeniorSalute@gmail.com.

Senior Breakfast Volunteers Needed

As we are fast approaching graduation, we are also planning for the many events to celebrate our seniors.  One of the ways we like to celebrate our seniors is by starting Graduation day with a hearty breakfast.  Seniors will be provided a delicious breakfast in the school commons at 8:00am on June 18th (Graduation Day) right before the graduation rehearsal held in the gym at 9:00am. The rehearsal is mandatory for seniors to participate in, in order to participate in the ceremony. This is a great opportunity for seniors to get some food, hang with friends, and relax before their big day gets busy.  We are reaching out as we need volunteers to help set up, serve, and clean up the breakfast.  The school is providing the supplies, but we need your helping hands.

We don't want you to leave, but ...

There is only one issue remaining of Kang Crier this school year. We know many of you have seniors that are graduating or will be leaving the area, and while it pains me to tell you this, you can easily unsubscribe from our newsletter. Just scroll down to the very bottom and click the "SafeUnsubscribe" link. But, just remember that with every unsubscribe, a kangaroo will shed a tear.
