Thank You Beautification Day Volunteers!

It was muddy & messy, but April showers took a 3 hour break, allowing 85 student & 10 parent volunteers to knock out an impressive amount of work beautifying our LWHS campus. Weeds were pulled, plants were trimmed, trash was collected and 6 yards of mulch was spread. Thank you so much to everyone that participated in making this joint PTSA / ASB event a great success!

Advocacy Update - LWPTSA Council Considers Resolution on Gun Violence

Proposed LWPTSA Council Resolution on Gun Violence Prevention and School Safety

In response to questions about the PTA's position on gun violence prevention and school safety, the LWPTSA Council board drafted a resolution for membership consideration. The resolution was introduced at the April 12th LWPTSA Council membership meeting. There will be a discussion and resolution vote at the May 3rd meeting. If the resolution passes, it will be shared with the LWSD school board, the Redmond, Kirkland and Sammamish city councils and legislators. Review the resolution HERE. Ask questions or provide resolution feedback to Melissa Stone, LWPTSA Council Advocacy Chair.

LWHS PTSA is a member of the Lake Washington PTSA Council.  As such, our delegates will have an opportunity to vote on the resolution at the May 3rd meeting.  Delegates vote on behalf of their PTSA members so LWHS members are encouraged to share any feedback with our delegates, Mindy Lincicome and Irene Neumann.

AP Exams

All students taking AP Exams should have picked up their AP Location Packets on April 27. The packet includes their bar-coded number labels (which they will need for their exams) and a letter that lists all their exams and their assigned testing locations. AP Exams run from May 7 through May 18. In the Bulletin for Students and Parents (part of their registration packet), there is a list of "What to Bring" and "What Not to Bring" to the exams. Students should read this carefully. And, please remind your student to leave the cell phone, computer, and backpack in the car. Good luck to each of these ambitious students!

Second Semester Progress

Third quarter is over, and finals will be here before students know it. If students are not doing well, they need to meet with their teacher to see how they can improve. They should take advantage of Roo Time/Tutorial and/or plan to meet with their teacher before or after school. Students can also form informal study groups to review lecture notes or prepare for tests. Counselors have a list of tutors if students are really behind or confused. For freshmen, sophomores and juniors, this may be a good opportunity to assess progress and perhaps take a summer school course to make up deficiencies; we have summer school booklets in the Counseling Center and information is also available on line. Seniors need to make one solid push to the end; if required classes are not passed, seniors will not be allowed to participate in the walk-through graduation ceremony.

Attendance Reminder

If your student is out 1-4 days for reasons other than being sick, they must fill out a pre-arranged absence form (page 1 only) at least a week in advance in order to ensure that the absences will be excused. If your student will be out 5 or more days for reasons other than being sick, they must fill out a pre-arranged absence form (pages 1 & 2) at least a week in advance, in order to ensure the absences will be excused.

When a student is out 5 or more days, the student needs to fill out also page 2 of the form, fill in the information as it pertains, list classes, parent needs to fill in how they plan to have their student stay on top of their studies while out, the student then will retrieve all the teacher's signatures and then retrieves the parent signature and then turns it into the attendance office for administrative approval. Page 2 also must need to be completed if the total number of days is 10 or more days. The process of filling out the pre-arranged absence form is also separate in that if your student had already informed teachers, they must also inform the attendance office. This line between Teachers and Attendance is 2 different areas.
