Welcome to the 'Kang'dom!

The PTSA would like to welcome all families, students and our fabulous LW staff to the 2017-18 school year! We are looking forward to a great year of learning, connecting and building a supportive and engaged community. Please read this newsletter and check out our website (www.lwhsptsa.org) to know what's happening at LW! We look forward to meeting you at the Welcome BBQ next week, or at Curriculum Night on Sept. 13. See you all at school!

Please Join the LWHS PTSA

Parents and staff we hope that you'll continue your strong membership support for the Lake Washington High School PTSA. Yes, PTSA at the high school level still really matters! Our students benefit from a strong PTSA and becoming a member is the simplest way to participate. When you join LWHS PTSA, you:
  • Show commitment to our school community - a big motivator to staff, students and volunteers
  • Join the largest child advocacy organization in the state, the WA State PTA (and National PTA too)
  • Gain access to the online student directory and receive discounts to FedEx Office, Great Wolf Lodge, Wild Waves and more
  • Get to vote on key decisions that affect the PTSA budget, programs, grants, scholarships etc.
You can join online and pay by credit card or pick up a membership form in the office and pay by check. Thank you for your support, we really appreciate it.
Back To School BBQ
Wednesday Aug 30 at 5:30-7:30pm

Stop by LW and enjoy a free BBQ dinner while you catch up with friends and neighbors and meet fellow Kang students and families. Take a tour of the school with student guides who will gladly answer your questions about what LW is really like. All LW students and families are welcome! Co-sponsored by LWHS PTSA and LWHS.

Drop off your Kleenex and other supplies
Drop off your Kleenex, hand sanitizer and printer paper donations!  These contributions go directly to your students.  The printer paper is used in the six student printers that PTSA donated a few years ago -- students have access to these laser printers everyday for printing assignments and schoolwork.
Show your support of LWHS!
Give to Pass-the-Pouch

To continue the level of programming provided by LWHS PTSA, we need your help. This year we have set our fundraising goal at $18,000, and with your generous support, we know we can do it!

This is our ONLY fundraiser of the year.

Pass-the-Pouch generates the income for our entire yearly PTSA operating budget. Here are just a few of the programs for which your donations provide essential support:
  • Staff, classroom, and club grants totaling $9,500 for equipment, supplies and activities
  • After school college applications workshops with hands on support for your student
  • Parent newsletter, students-in-need fund, emergency preparedness supplies
  • $4,000 in Sheeley scholarships to outstanding graduating seniors
  • Senior Salute and Senior Party - a celebration of our graduating class
New this year: To build community and show your LW spirit, all PTSA donors will receive a LW window cling

Make an online donation today! Learn more or donate by check using the donation form.

Thank you for your support of LW students and staff!
Help Spread the Word

Parents, the "Kang Crier" is the primary communication mechanism through which the LWHS PTSA provides information to LWHS families. The next several issues will be sent to returning LWHS families and to those incoming families who have signed up to receive the Kang Crier. Once we receive all LWHS family email addresses in October, we will send the Kang Crier to all. In the meantime, please help us reach all incoming families by forwarding this to families who may not receive it. They can sign up to receive the Kang Crier on the PTSA website or forward them this email so they can click and subscribe.

Seeking PTSA Membership Co-Chair

We're recruiting for a PTSA Membership co-chair or Membership-in-Training position. Our current longstanding Membership chair will be leaving after this year and it would be great to recruit someone to train to take over the position for next year. This volunteer job is fun and rewarding. It's a Board level position and combines marketing, sales, and computer skills. It's easy and fun once you've been trained. Why not learn more about it? For more information email lwhsptsamem@gmail.com.
Kang School Supplies: Keeping it Light

Have you been searching the LW website for a school supply list and been unable to find one? That's because there isn't one. Mystery solved! Your students will get their supply lists from each of their teachers during the first week of school. Remember there are no lockers at LWHS, and it's safest to keep backpack weight no more than 10-15% of bodyweight. Here is more info on why paying attention to backpack weight is important.

And some helpful tips for your Kang to keep in mind while shopping:

  • Buy your backpack IN PERSON so that you can make sure it fits properly.
  • Avoid large binders/composition books when possible. Small plastic binders/folders or accordion files are great alternatives.
  • Water bottle- keep it small and lightweight and refill it during the day.
  • Only carry what you need (not a ream of paper or 47 pencils)
  • Set 10 minutes aside to clean out your backpack every week
